Sinfonietta Helene Released and the Return of Acoustic Syndicate

Sinfonietta Helene: the whole piece is here now

In August I shared The Despair, the heart of Sinfonietta Helene, the movement that came first. Now the other two have joined it, so the arc can be heard the way it was meant to be: uncertainty, then despair, then hope. Beginning to end.

I want to say one thing about that last movement, because I don't want it misheard.

The Hope is not optimism. Optimism is the shallow insistence that everything will be fine, and I have no use for that. Real hope is the harder, older thing. It is what's left after you have looked directly at what is broken, refused to look away, and still find yourself moving toward something meaningful. It is the garden tended with no guarantee of harvest. The tree planted today so that generations from now can enjoy the shade.

That is ultimately the message that I want to convey. Not that everything is fine, but that the work is always worth doing, the soil is always worth tilling, and we should all plant the trees for our future selves.

When I started this, I was alone. By the end of it, there were seventy people in a room making it real, and four hundred more who had lived through the same season listening back. The piece taught me its own lesson in the making: the hardest things arrive alone, and the only way through them is together.

Thank you for being here for all three.

Acoustic Syndicate returns to Deerfields

On Saturday, November 7, Acoustic Syndicate goes back to Deerfields. It will be our only full public concert of 2026.

Deerfields is 940 acres of family land in Mills River, 30 minutes south of Asheville, bordered by Pisgah National Forest. It has hosted a lot of our history. Greg Redden, its owner and our friend, recently lost his home in a fire on the property. All proceeds go directly to Greg.

Snake Oil Medicine Show and Nikki Talley & Jason Sharp join us. There will be a silent auction and a raffle for a donated Stratocaster.

Gates open at noon, so come early and walk the lakes and the ridge trail. Camping is available. Bring your own drinks and chairs, and bring cash for the auction, the raffle, and donations.

  • 4:00 Nikki Talley & Jason Sharp
  • 5:00 Snake Oil Medicine Show
  • 7:00 Acoustic Syndicate, two sets

Tickets $35, kids under 12 free. Camping $20 per person.
